Mahn

Mahn means Fisherwomen in Gadigal language. They fished Sydney’s coastal harbours, bays and waterways for a very long time, sustaining both the people and sea in harmony. The fishhook shaped cases are made from CNC cut pieces which has been assembled separately. Floating above the cases is mahn, a sculpture made by Aunty Phyllis Stewart , Uncle Steve Russell and communities to pay our respects to Sydney’s original fisherwomen and honour the centuries old tradition of caring for Warrane (Sydney Harbour) that we all come to enjoy and share today. Creation of cabinet including lights to display archaelogical collection from Gadigal people as tools and materials the fishwomen used to bring in their tied bark canoes. The display highlights their stories which mostly been lost. Malgun, Daringa, Bouragegal, Bennelong, Barangaroo are fascinating figures that we could learn from.
